1995 Subaru Impreza 555 - Ex-Colin McRae
1995 Subaru Impreza 555 - Ex-Colin McRae, and part of his World Championship-winning campaign.
There is nothing more iconic in the rally world than a “blue McRae Subaru” – and nothing more special than a car from his World Championship-winning campaign. The late, great Colin McRae only won the World Rally Championship once, taking the 1995 crown for the works 555 Subaru World Rally Team, but he certainly did it in style, mud-sliding his way to victory in front of his home crowd at Rally GB on 22nd November 1995. This car, chassis PRO/STI/01/94022 was used by McRae on the Monte Carlo and Tour de Corse Rallies in his championship year, scoring points with a 5th place in Corsica.
The 1995 World Rally Championship was still under Group A regulations, meaning the car has a degree of simplicity that makes it genuinely useable on roads today – the systems on the car are infinitely simpler than those on a later WRC car and its conventional H-pattern gearbox makes running the car easier and arguably more enjoyable. It is also eligible for the FIA Historic Rally Championship.
In late 1995, “94022” was sold to Prodrive’s prized privateer Frédéric Dor, who always had his cars in plain white but full factory spec beneath – and always run by the factory Prodrive team. Dor competed in both World Rallies and National Rallies in the car – his most notable result in the World Championship being a 6th overall in the 1997 Safari Rally. Driving 94022, Dor would go onto win rallies such as Rallye Terre de Corse and Rallye Terre des Drailles in 1998. The car remained in Dor’s private collection until 2016.
A highly original, unquestioned, and truly useable factory McRae Subaru, from his World Championship-winning year.
Today the car is registered L200 FDD, as per its time with Frédéric Dor. The car was registered L555 BAT while rallied by McRae and the Subaru World Rally Team in the 1995 World Rally Championship.
